The return of the Start menu is certainly one of highlights of Windows 10 operating system. But the Start menu comes with its own share of problems. The Start menu in Windows 10, although works great most of the time, at times, it doesn’t open at all when you press the Windows logo key or click the Start button on the taskbar. The best way to view all installed apps in Windows 10. Wouldn’t it be great if it was possible to add all installed programs and apps to a single folder and launch apps/programs from there? Luckily, in Windows 10, there is an option to view all installed apps from one place and you can launch apps from there. This means that they have been installed on at least 100,000 commercial Windows 10 devices, and that Microsoft has not detected significant issues with the app in diagnostic data. Since these apps are prevalent in the ecosystem at large, you can be confident that they will work in your environment as well.

I have the problem that suddenly my start menu does no longer open. The annoying thing is, that the same thing happened to me already one month ago. At that time I tried to fix it with the in-place installation via the media creation tool, which did not help, so I reset my PC and had to install all applications again. Afterwards it worked again.
Now, only one month later this happened to me again. I tried to run the start menu troubleshooter. The result was that
'Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost' and 'Microsoft.Windows.Cortana' applications need to be installed correctly. However, the troubleshooter itself does not fix this problem, neither do I know how to do this myself. It would be nice if someone could help me with this.
I also tried running dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth as suggested in this thread. As a result I got the following:
Error: 0x800f081f
The source files could not be found.
Use the 'Source' option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature. For more information on specifying a source location, see http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=243077.
I also tried running sfc /scannow. Here is the result:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windirLogsCBSCBS.log. For
example C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
supported in offline servicing scenarios.
So, as it seems, no success so far.
I also checked for system restore points and available updates, but there are none.
Apparently I am also not able to run modern apps anymore. There is a calculator-key on my keyboard that should open the calculator app. If I press it now, the calculator only pops up for a split second and then disappears again. I am also not able to open the action center.
Apart from that the system works fine. However, without the start menu productive working is not possible. The next thing I am going to try is to fix the problem using the media creation tool.
What else could I do to try fix my OS? Windows 7 and Windows 8 were very stable and reliable operating systems, but with Windows 10 I've had a lot of problems, so far.

Sometimes an app on Windows 10 just doesn’t want to play nice. Perhaps its an issue with the Store app, preventing you from downloading and updating any of your already installed apps, or the mail app is crashing at launch for no obvious reason, or photos is playing hide and seek with your very important selfies.

Whatever the issue, when it arose in Windows 10 version 1511 and below, the only recourse was to uninstall and reinstall the app in question. If it was a built-in app, the user would mist likely have to find a workaround or hope a store update flushed out the junk data interfering with the system.

With the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft is introducing an “App Reset” feature into Windows for Store apps. What this does is reset all settings and data in a given app so the app is reverted to the state it was when it was initially installed from the store – flixing buggy apps without forcing an uninstall.
If you’re on the Windows 10 Anniversary Update and have a stuck/buggy app, here’s how to fix it.
- Open the settings app.
- Navigate to System.
- In the system sub-menu, navigate to Apps and Features
- Search for the app in question.
- After selecting the app, select advanced options.
- Tap reset.
- All data will be deleted, including whatever bug prevents the app from properly working.
- You may now re-open the app once more
Microsoft is making it easier and safer to use Windows store apps as opposed to legacy apps on Windows 10, and this new tool is just another way of showing it.
